The Best Halloween Books for Kids

As a mom of four and an elementary school teacher, I’ve spent years reading stacks of children’s books…especially when it comes to holidays. Halloween is one of my absolute favorite times to bring out fun, spooky (not too scary!) stories that kids can enjoy at home or in the classroom. Over the years, I’ve found some incredible Halloween books that create giggles, imagination, and just the right amount of spookiness.

Here’s my roundup of the best Halloween books for kids. These are perfect for bedtime stories, classroom read-alouds, or cozy family reading nights this fall season.

Each of these titles brings something special to story time. If you’re looking for a story with a rhythmic repetition grab the book The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything, or maybe you want some clever humor from Creepy Carrots and Creepy Pair of Underwear, or magical rhymes with Room on the Broom.

Books like Pumpkin Jack and Too Many Pumpkins bring in seasonal themes with lessons kids can connect with, while classics like It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown and The Night Before Halloween add nostalgia for everyone to enjoy together.

There are also sweet and simple picks for younger readers such as like My First Halloween and imaginative ghost stories like Gustavo the Shy Ghost and Ghost Afraid of the Dark that encourage bravery and friendship.

If you’re looking for books with silly rhymes choose one like There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bat or a playful mystery classic like I Spy Spooky Night. This collection of books has a little something for every age group. They’re stories my kids ask for year after year, and they make Halloween feel extra magical, whether you’re reading at bedtime, in the classroom, or by the glow of a pumpkin on the porch.
