Dollhouse Makeover

This is by far my one of my favorite mini makeovers on the kids’ toys. My mother gave me this old Fisher Price dollhouse that she had found at a thrift store. My oldest daughter was gifted it when she was a little girl and played hours in this dollhouse. Once my second daughter was able to play with it, the love of the dollhouse was passed on to her.

I have cherished dollhouses since I was a young girl, but never had one of my own. I wanted to bring that experience to my girls. So, instead of investing in an expensive dollhouse with the fear of it breaking from everyday play, I spruced up the plastic thrifted one.

How I did it:

The colors I chose for the dollhouse were farmhouse colors. I wanted a white house with the black roof theme. However, my favorite color is pink and I thought it would be so fun to add in some pink doors.

First, I wiped down the whole dollhouse with a wash cloth. Scrubbed the dust out of the crevices. Next, I peeled off all the stickers that remained intact on the dollhouse. I applied a warm wet wash cloth to soften it up and scrapped it off. At times I had to use a plastic scrapper to get some stubborn ones off.

Afterwards, I took it outside and sprayed it down with KILZ primer spray. I learned this the hard way that the plastic needed to be primed. There were places that the spray paint was wrinkling up, so I had to sand it down and once I applied the primer it was much smoother.

Once the primer had dried, I sprayed the whole house with Rust-Oleum white matte spray paint. I used about 4 cans of white to cover every part of the house (inside and out). I would recommend to do a project like this on a sunny day to allow the paint to dry quickly.

The hardest areas to get paint were on in the inside of the house that were hard to reach. I had to really spray into the crevices on the inside of the house and on the porch area.

After the entire house was painted, I took the house inside and hand painted the roof with black matte acrylic paint. I made sure to cover the areas on the roof in the front and the sides of the house. A very steady hand and the right size paint brushes is necessary in this process.

Next, I took the doors off of the house. I spray painted them using Ultra Matte Rust-Oleum Rustic Pink color. This is such a beautiful color! I absolutely love this color choice for pink. It really made the doors pop out and contrasted well with the white and black house.

Once the doors had dried, I attached them back on. In addition, I spray painted some of the furniture that came with the dollhouse. We added in some handmade furniture pieces and handmade dollhouse decor. The amazement in my girls faces when they saw the transformation was all worth it!

The dollhouse looks completely transformed and got a modern upgrade. I call it the farmhouse dollhouse. This is a project that we can always keep adding to. We recently decorated it for Christmas and it looks absolutely ADORABLE!

I handcrafted the rug in this phot using jute string and cardboard. I cut cardboard into the shape of a circle and then used jute string to loop in the shape of a flower and hot glued the string to the bottom of the rug. I love this rug!
