DIY Christmas Ornaments using Baking Soda + Corn Starch
If you are looking for an affordable and adorable Christmas decoration, you can’t go wrong with these homemade ornaments. Frosty white ornaments dangling from your tree or a gift tag. These ornaments are easy enough to do with your kids and can be painted to any color.
In the past, I have done the salt dough ornaments and the cinnamon scented ornaments. Both of those are so fun to do, but this time I wanted something different. What I love about this recipe is that these ornaments give such a beautiful appearance to your tree. They are matte snowy white, with crisp edges on the tree providing such elegance.
Reasons to make these ornaments:
- Elegant look
- Simple to make
- Perfect care-free activity to do with your kids
- They can be shaped in any shape you want.
- Inexpensive
With a toddler and two cats, I am so hesitant on adding sentimental ornaments to our tree. I will add them to the top of the tree, but toward the middle and bottom of the tree, it looks pretty bare.
These ornaments are perfect to add because they are cheap to make and if one of them breaks from the cats or kids, I make so many that I can easily replace it. The tree can remain decorated without breaking valuable ornaments.
How to Make Baking Soda + Corn Starch Ornaments:
Ingredients:
- 1/2 c. cornstarch
- 1 c. baking soda
- 3/4 c. water
- Preheat oven too 175 degrees.
- Combine cornstarch, baking soda and water in a saucepan. Mix together until combined. It will be very watery and look like milk.
- If you want your ornaments to smell good, you can add essential oils into the saucepan at this time.
- On medium heat, warm up the mixture stirring constantly. The mixture will slowly create a paste and then turn into a ball of dough.
- Once the ball is formed, remove it from heat. Transfer it to another dish and allow it to cool to room temperature. You want to allow it to cool so that you can kneed it.
- On a flat surface, kneed the dough.
- Roll it out to about 1/4-1/2 inch thick. Using an embossed rolling pin is fun to use for this craft.
- Using cookie cutters, but the dough into the shape you want. Don’t forget to add a hole to the top of your shape to ensure a place for the ornament string to go through.
- Lay the ornaments on a baking sheet. Bake at 175 degrees for 40 minutes flipping them over half way in between. Be sure to watch them so they don’t brown.
- Remove from the oven and allow them to cool.
Once they have cooled, add some beautiful string!
My favorite strings that add to the elegant look:
