How to Decorate for Winter After Christmas Farmhouse Style

Need some help with the transition to winter decor? Here are some simple tips to follow and an understanding on how to de-Christmas your house. Keep reading for ideas and some pictures help guide you.

Typically, a few days after Christmas I begin to get that itch to take down all of the Christmas decor and move on to winter. It feels good to rid of all the clutter and to open the spaces in the house back up. Don’t get me wrong, I do miss the sparkly lights and the magic that Christmas gives to a space. However, once Christmas is over its time to de-Christmas the house and put it all away.

Many people don’t think about winter decor. We prepare for spring, fall and Christmas, but what about winter? Winter decor is special too. With temperatures being so cold outside and spending more time indoors it is great to have a space that feels cozy and seasonal.

There are a few things I consider when decorating for winter. It can seem a little overwhelming moving on from Christmas to winter and not knowing what to keep out what to put away. However, if you keep these few simple things in mind it can make it a lot easier.

Here are a few things I consider when going from Christmas to Winter:

  • Incorporate as many soft and neutral colors into your winter decor- winter whites, creams, beiges, blues and greens.
  • Get rid of the Santa decor and pieces that have a lot of Christmas red in them. Such as pillows, ornaments, and small knickknacks.
  • Add in some natural elements- pinecones, greenery, wood decor
  • Keep things looking simple. There is no need to go over the top. Just soft touches of a winter feel in the house will make a huge difference.
  • Add texture through chunky blankets, pillows, wooden logs

Keep Winter in Mind When Decorating for Christmas

When decorating for Christmas, I usually keep winter decor in mind. I try to think how I can decorate for winter while decorating for Christmas. This way when I am taking the Christmas items down, I just have to rearrange a few things for winter rather than starting all over again. Flocked trees, pinecones, greenery and dried oranges are wonderful items to have out for Christmas and keep for winter.

For example, here is a space that I decorated for Christmas and then I just removed a few items to that screamed out Christmas and left the rest for winter decor.

I did the same with my mantel this year too. I removed the Santa and reindeer, but kept the white houses and greenery. Also, I added this orange sliced garland (an easy diy tutorial for it can be found here) that was on one of my Christmas trees and added it here.

I also took away the red pillows and replaced it with these black and white chevron patterned pillows.

I also added these cute gold hoop wreaths to this small space. I love how elegant these hoop wreaths look and they are quite simple to make. You can find a fun tutorial through this post.

You want to reduce the amount of reds in the pieces you keep out. Any signs that has Christmas phrases, any ornaments or gnomes, Santas, or nutcrackers. All of these items scream Christmas and not winter.

Shop Sales for Farmhouse Items and Reuse What You Already Have:

If you are lucky and hit the stores’ after Christmas sales, you may be able to score some items to add to your winter decoration. Such as flocked trees, wreaths, pillows and blankets. A few years ago, I was able to get this cute pillow from Target at 90% off and its just a simple winter looking pillow that I add to space to provide some texture and depth.

Another fun to thing to add is pinecones. Over the years I have collected many pinecones. My mother has given me some oversized pinecones that I love and I have purchased some too. Pinecones are such an inexpensive item to add. You can lay them out, place them in a decorative bowl, add them to your wreaths, create a centerpiece for you table with them and you can even add some snowy elements to them.

Adding in dried fruit into your decor is a great way to add natural elements as well as a pop of color. You can create a garland with dried oranges or grapefruit or you can use it as decorative pieces on another item.

These simple oversized paper bag snowflakes are also great to add to a space adding depth. You can find the tutorial here. We made these fun snowflakes for Christmas decor and I am leaving it up for winter too. We might add some more to the kids room too.
